Macrame

The word Macrame is derived from the Arabic miqramah believed to mean “striped towel”, “ornamental fringe” or “embroidered veil”.  The origin of Macrame is generally attributed to Arabic weavers during the 13th Century.  These Artisans knotted the excess thread and yarn along the edges of hand-loomed fabrics into decorative fringes on bath towels, shawls and veils.

Thanks to the Arabic Artisans macrame slowly spread throughout Europe and eventually became a common passtime for sailors who were often at sea for months on end.
